Sisters of Misery by Megan Kelley Hall

[description from Amazon]

There are some girls who have everything...

She has the right clothes, the right friends, and the right last name, but fifteen-year-old Maddie Crane sometimes feels like an outsider in her clique in the wealthy, seaside town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts. And when her gorgeous, eccentric cousin Cordelia LeClaire moves to town, Maddie is drawn toward her ethereal, magical spirit and teeters even more toward the edge of her friends' tightly-knit circle...

Then there are the jealous ones...

Kate Endicott and the Sisters of Misery--a secret clique of the most popular, powerful girls in school--are less than thrilled by Cordelia's arrival. When Kate's on-again, off-again boyfriend Trevor takes an interest in Cordelia, the Sisters of Misery become determined to make her pay...

Now Maddie must choose between the allure and power of the Sisters of Misery and her loyalty to her beloved cousin. But she'll have to give up on ever fitting in and accept the disturbing truth about the town, her friends, her mysterious cousin, and even herself as she faces the terrifying wrath of the Sisters of Misery...

Review:

Yowza. What a fanatastic book. Do I really have to wait until next year to read the sequel? I want to know what happens already. Argh.

Sisters of Misery is fantasically written. I got sucked in after the first few pages because they were actually kind of creepy, and I, for some reason, like to read creepy things that may or may not give me nightmares. As the story goes on, it only gets more creepy, haunting, and suspenseful. There's loads of mystery packed in only a few hundred pages, and the mystery is definitely difficult to solve, even though I personally figured a few things out. But my other ideas? Hah. Those got shot down quickly with all the new, exciting information coming about. I had to keep reguessing and reguessing and I ended up guessing a lot wrong.

The characters were also fantastically written. There's lots of information about them given, but not so much that it takes away from the story. Even if I hated some- Kate. She was quite loony- and thought some were a little out there- Cordelia. I mean, "Love and Butterflies"?- I did really like the fact that I felt like I got a sense of who they really are.

But my favorite thing was the history that was snuck in. I've always been a fan of history and historical fiction, and even though this definitely isn't historical fiction, there was just enough of the town's history put in to make my inner history nerd happy.

Now, if you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? GO BUY THE BOOK NOW. Go. Right now.

9/10

  1. Thanks so much for your amazing review, Khyrinthia! I'm so happy you liked it, and I hope that you will love the second in the series, THE LOST SISTER. I'm frantically trying to finish it up so that it will be ready and out on the shelves by next August!

Love and Butterflies, (hee hee, just kidding--I'm not as kooky as Cordelia)
