[description from Amazon]What is the toughest request anyone can be asked to fulfill?
Travis Morrison is a champion diver and one of the most popular kids at school. On the first day of summer vacation, while boating on the lake with his friends, Travis attempts a silly stunt dive that goes wrong. He fears he has broken his leg. Instead, his trip to the hospital reveals he has a rare form of cancer, and to save him, the doctors tell his parents they must amputate. In an instant, Travis’s life and the lives of everyone around him are forever changed.
Travis is determined that he and only he should decide the course of his life. He has a plan, but he can’t carry it out alone. Will he convince one of his friends to fulfill his most important request?
Review:
This is my first Lurlene McDaniel book, and I have to say that I'm not overly impressed. I have heard that Lurlene books rock, but I wasn't that impressed with this one. It's most likely just this book that I wasn't impressed with, but I was expecting more.
It's a really quick book. Quick because it doesn't take long to read, and everything happens so fast. Because the book is so short, there's not much time to build up the events or really have time to process them. Travis jumps off the cliff right at the beginning of the book, and after that it's decision after event after decision after event. The subject matter- euthanasia- is thought-provoking and interesting to discuss, but there's so much quickly going on that it's hard to think about it until the end.
I usually like multiple POV in books, but because there were four points of view in this already short book, I felt that it was a lot to handle. The characters usually don't speak for more than five or six pages at a time, so there's constant back and forth. It's nice to see the characters differing perspectives on Travis's problems and decisions, but there's just a lot to take in. I also don't think the first person narrative it helped to develop the characters that much. The characterization was done well enough so that the characters are believable, but not entirely realistic. They change throughout the book, but it's not that obvious or that much.
My thoughts on this book can be summed up in one word: ok. Breathless was interesting and thought provoking, but it could have been a lot better.
6.5/10

I haven't read Lurleen McDaniel since I was a teenager, but my recollection of them is that someone always contracts a terminal illness and dies. Usually leaving behind another heartbroken teen. My sister ATE her books up, but I lost interest after a couple of attempts. I'm not saying they're badly written AT ALL, I'm just saying her books are just not my thing.
ReplyDeleteeeeep I wanna read this
ReplyDeleteI've yet to read any of Lurlene McDaniel's books either. I've heard both good and bad things about them, so I might have to pick one of her books up to see for myself. I do love the cover of this book, though.

ReplyDeletehey,
ReplyDeletethe one who read the book, can u pls tell me who killed Travis because I don't get that part?
i read this book and loved it
ReplyDeletei cant believe what conner did
It wasn't conner it was Emily. Connor didn't believe in God. Emily, in her bedroom was talking about all Travis had left was God's Mercy then stuck her bible in her closet. The killer refered to itself as the Angel of Mercy. At first I thought it was Darla because she said if Travis woke up, he would have recognized her eyes and Travis fell in love with her because of her eye. Then, It said that no one would have ever guess who did it. Darla and Conner were okay with his plan, Emily wasn't. Therefore, your obvious killer :)
ReplyDeleteIt was Emily? Really? I think the friend's name was copper. I loved the book. It was sad as all get out ,but very good. Does anyoneelse have theory on who killed Travis? How can i get in touch with the author? Please email me at rach9306@yahoo.com :0 thanks. Who did it?
ReplyDeleteWell, really, i just finished the book, and i thought it was Cooper (The best friends name) at first, but now that i think about it, Emily seems to be the one who did it. But, her family wasn't there at the time he died. It might have been someone that Travis let the plan out to, like a doctor or something, but i dont want to complicate things. i think it was Darla. I honestly do, because of that other person said, her eyes.
ReplyDeleteThat is right it said her eyes....first I thought it was Emily because she could have used her moms nurse coat...it could be either one of those two... I think it was darla...
ReplyDeletei read this book and its been my favorite since 7th grade, im in 8th as of now.. and i adore it. i can visuallize it very well, im doing a book trailer on this and i need to add music to it and i think second chance by shine down is perfect but i honestly think it was darla that did it.
